How to compare Jira description changes during review

What to look for when the latest issue text is not the whole story.

MintedTools • Updated October 3, 2026 • Practical guide

When an issue description changes repeatedly, the latest version may hide why a requirement or acceptance criterion moved. Comparing revisions helps reviewers understand the sequence without relying solely on comments or memory.

First locate the relevant change

Start from the Jira issue history, identify the edit window, and look for description revisions. Narrowing the timeframe can help when a ticket contains many status, assignment or label changes that are unrelated to the description.

Compare the meaningful content

Look for additions, removals and substitutions. Pay particular attention to dates, quantities, customer-facing commitments, acceptance criteria, links, and scope boundaries. A changed number can matter more than several paragraphs of formatting edits.

Preserve context

Where available, record when the revision occurred and who made it. Do not assume an edit was incorrect solely because it differs; changes may reflect revised requirements, newly available information, or an approved decision.

A simple review process

  1. Open the issue and identify the prior and current descriptions.
  2. Compare substantive changes, not just formatting differences.
  3. Confirm that acceptance criteria and linked requirements remain aligned.
  4. Ask for clarification in the issue when the reason is unclear.
  5. Document the outcome so the next reviewer has context.
